Just flew into my first high altitude (7700') airport in an MU-2. Gunnison is a good starter, 9400 feet of runway and adequate room around the airport before much higher terrain.

The FBO (AvFlight) is okay but not very well organized. They waive the handling fee if you buy 140 gallons, but it's $8.50/gal, yuck. They're open 6am-6pm but occasionally no one's there because they're helping out with a commercial flight arriving/departing the main terminal.

Why Gunnison? It's not the town itself, but it's 1 hop from my Dallas home, 20F cooler due to altitude, good hikes nearby, and since it's not a "destination", there are cheap rooms and cars available at the last minute. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison national park is 60mi west, a must-see with nice hikes and spectacular views. Crested Butte is 20mi north, that's the "destination" that's always booked up... but a fairly short drive to get to those hikes, bike rides, and restaurants.

Gunnison is a serious challenge in winter, starting with altimetry corrections due to the extreme cold.
