Looks like I'll be going in to Teterboro for the first time. I'll be going to the Meridian FBO to take advantage of the CAA fuel prices. Any words of wisdom?

I can tell you as a controller at hpn that there can be times where you can't departure. I'm not saying don't go there but be prepared for delays and if you don't get any then be thankful.

Have been into Teterboro twice, both trips we had a 30 - 40min delay in departing. Not much we could do but sit with the Turbines burning fuel.

Dan -- I used to have a Twin Comanche based at HPN. Two of my favorite "working with ATC" flights were coming in to HPN -- one where New York Approach was so busy that all I had time to say was either, "Roger" or "Wilco" -- no tail number, no read-back, no nuttin'! It was glorious! The other was when the local controller asked me if I could make a short approach from the downwind leg. Oh yeah! Maybe I'd be better off going in to HPN and then heading to Manhattan. I'll have to see if CAA has anyone at HPN.

Also, we stayed in times square...about 11 miles away, took 2 hrs in traffic
to get there at around 5pm so I highly suggest being there late
morning/early afternoon if going into NYC.

I wonder if KHPN and taking the commuter rail would have been faster?

The White Plains to Grand Central times (for 5pm this Monday) on the
rail are about 40 minutes with a train leaving every 10-15 minutes or
so.

Rail station is about 3-4 miles from the airport, so short taxi ride
or FBO shuttle.

Isn't there also a line which runs near Teterboro? Or is it a bus?

If you are going to NYC you might consider going to HPN. It is easier to get into the city. They drive you to the train, about 15 min. You end up at Grand Central Station.

Thanks, Dick. It looks like White Plains (HPN) might be the better option. I think the trip into Manhattan, whether by train or by car, would take just about as long from there as from Teterboro, with the added benefit of a lesser chance of delays when leaving. Also, I had a pretty bad experience with Panorama at HPN (they charged me $78.00 to service a nose tire), but they're gone now, and Landmark (who bought them out) has CAA fuel available. Plus, there are a lot more routes to take into the City from White Plains than from Teterboro.

Does anybody have any idea what routing I'll get into and out of HPN if I'm coming from the South? I fly into Bridgeport a lot (BDR), so I'm familiar with the Shark Route. Will I still get that?

Dan -- Landmark would be the FBO I'd go to because they have CAA contract fuel available there.

Am I still going to have to come up over the Atlantic and over Long Island to get into HPN (Shark Route) or can I get a more direct routing into HPN from the south?

Well... who wants to sit with the family and baggage, plus maybe a smelly cab driver, for two hours in the Lincoln tunnel...?

I did the train in from HPN with my family and it was fine (I used to commute in and out of NYC from that area though, so I was comfortable with it). Depending on your kids’ ages and experiences, they can think the train is part of the fun.

Ross that depends on what altitude your flying. Generally flying from the south above 15k your going to have to fly the around about. This is because of all the jfk lga and ewr landers and departers. Boston center handles that airspace. The funny part is that ny center does not even control the airspace above them. If you were to fly say at or below 10k typically they would route you around the west side over etx sbj sax area. Not sure the the exact route. If you were to cancel IFR (weather permitting) say around acy you could fly right over jfk direct HPN. But don't tell anyone I said that. Ha. We have a lot of pc-12's that do that exact thing and it saves them fuel and time.

Yes the travel from teb is unpredictable. From HPN the travel to the train is easy and predictable. Grab the train and easy ride. You can sit on the road for hours going into the city and I have and hate it. I only travel on the train anymore.

Will you actually get the Buono 4, or will they reroute you over the Atlantic? Going into Bridgeport, I've only ever gotten the Shark Route.

Some local pilots will file for KFRG to avoid the long detour and then either cancel or change destination to HPN when they get close. I think that procedure is frowned on by ATC.
Generally, IFR around NYC is a royal PIA. Hope for good weather and make sure you get your Class B clearance. If the weather is lousy resign yourself to a 100 mile reroute at 4000 ft and just take your lumps.

I just looked on fltplan.com for the routings ATC has actually been handing out. Seems as though there's always a circuitous routing to HPN, but Teterboro cuts about 20 minutes of flying time. However, Meridian FBO (which offers the CAA contract fuel) wants $250 per night to hangar the Mits. I think I'll be checking out Essex County, CDW. Their advertised fuel price is about $1.00 per gallon higher than I'd pay at TEB, but if the hangar is less expensive, I'll save overall.

Thanks to all who offered help on this. I've decided to try Essex County Airport in Caldwell, NJ (KCDW). White Plains (KHPN) would add about 100nm to the trip because of the circuitous routings ATC hands out to get there. Teterboro (KTEB) has a high hangar charge -- $250.00 per night, but they do have CAA contract fuel, which would save me about $1.00 per gallon over the price of fuel at Essex County. However, the hangar fee at Essex is only $107.00 per night, which is a savings of $143.00 for every night I stay there. I don't think I'd be able to buy enough gas at Teterboro to make up the difference in hangar costs, so Essex it is, at least for the first couple of time.

Best wishes to you and yours at this joyous time of year!

If you are going to be going there on a regular basis, you may try and negotiate a better rate for all. I've done it at many places that I go to regularly.

Would it be an option to take the train from Bridgeport in to Grand Central. There are departures every 40 minutes around mid-day and its about an hour 30 minute train ride.

Jet A at BDR is $4.15 at Three Wings (Colt 12/10)

Tony -- I've been going in and out of Bridgeport for a long time -- actually had my Navajo based there for a long time before getting the Mits. Atlantic has been willing to give me a really good deal on both fuel and hangar, but Bridgeport is just a bit too far out of the City. From Greenwich, it wasn't that bad, but it'd add a lot of extra time to the trip. Additionally, since I'd be coming in from the south, I'd have to fly out over the Atlantic and then over Long Island. I think I'm going to see how they treat me at Essex County. If that doesn't work out, I think it'll be between White Plains and Bridgeport (with a bit of a preference for Bridgeport).

Thanks for your help! MUCH appreciated!
