In have need to be in downtown DC later on this month …
With $9/gallon fuel prices as DCA and IAD … out of the question …
I would appreciate some feedback from those who frequent the area … which of the surrounding airports provide good fuel prices, access to DC, ease of access into the DC TCA , etc …
Your recommendations are appreciated …
Thanks …. Rocky

I go frequently for NBAA board meetings. In fact I have one next week. I always fly into HEF (Manassas). There are two FBO’s, APP Jet Center and Dulles Aviation. Both are good and have contract fuel. The last time I went if I remember correctly, it was about $5.00/gal. I rent a car and as long as you avoid rush hour, it is about a one hour drive into Washington. If you go into the city early in the morning, or leave Washington anytime from about 3:30-8:00pm it is an awful drive. You can also take a train as the station is near the airport and they will drive you to it.

Rocky,

The easiest is Manassas (KHEF). You'll be flying in on an IFR flight plan but so there are no special things you need to do with HEF and the tower will close your plan with Potomac approach. Two FBOs on the field. I recommend APP Jet Center on the East side of the field. I base there but several MITS drivers use it when they visit DC. The manager (Quinn Reddin) is a good guy and costs are very reasonable. If you belong to CAA or UVAIR you get a nice break on fuel as well (and their list prices aren't bad). They have a Hertz rental onsite but can give you a ride tithe VRE train station (about 2 miles away) if you want to take the train into town (just know it is a commuter train...lots of runs into town in the morning, runs back out in the afternoon/evening).

Another alternative is Stafford (KRMN) which is South of town. No tower but I think they have rental cars on site. The problem is they are right on I-95 which is a gosh darn nightmare both ways. Manassas is west of town near I-66 which tends to be a far better drive than I-95 (it's why I live West instead of South of DC).

Give me a call at (301) 529-4547 if I can be of help.

Dave

Rocky;

Usually, we go to Frederick, also the home of AOPA headquarters.

From some years ago, Manassas had better pricing and contract fuel available. It was inside the outer ring of the Class B and you could go in under the Class B; the ADIZ applies to all altitudes. As long as you are not driving into DC during am rush or away from DC during pm rush I think the flight time saved would balance the drive time

DC is a tough one. I think everything considered, Manassas (KHEF) is your best bet. FYI, DCA is not an option. Through colt or UVair, fuel is around $4.50/gal. I fly into APP regularly and they handle MU-2's regularly. Time your arrival/departure carefully, traffic can be terrible.

I saw where some of you are using Colt and Uvair fuel cards, I was thinking about getting one or both, any recommendations, what do they save and which one if best?

Colt all the way. Ask for Amy Sperry. She does a great job. If they don't have the lowest price, call and they will try and at least match

I used to go into GAI. Short ride to the Shady Grove Metro station. Fuel prices reasonable. May be a little out of the way if you're comjng from the southwest.
